Nomadic Communities
Information and resources for different communities.
Nomadic communities are groups of people who traditionally move from one place to another for their livelihood instead of living permanently in one location. Their occupations often include traditional crafts, animal husbandry, folk arts, trading, and seasonal work.
Semi-nomadic communities are groups that spend part of the year in a fixed settlement and migrate seasonally for employment or other traditional occupations.
Many of these communities face challenges in accessing education, healthcare, housing, identity documents, and government welfare schemes. The Government of Karnataka has introduced dedicated welfare programs and development initiatives to improve their quality of life.
The Government of Karnataka introduced a Comprehensive Development Plan for Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities through Government Order No. SWD 234 BMS 2007 (dated 21-09-2007).
The primary objective of this initiative is to improve the social and economic conditions of Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities by providing better access to education, housing, infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and other welfare services.
The plan is implemented through the Backward Classes Welfare Department in coordination with other government agencies.
